How much does DAM software cost in 2026?

Last updated: October 2026

The short answer

In 2026, DAM software costs anywhere from $0 to well over $100,000 a year. Where you land depends less on features than on how the vendor sells: published self-serve plans start under $100 a month, while quote-only enterprise platforms typically cost $15,000 to $75,000 a year before implementation.

TierTypical costExamples
Free plans$0Data Dwell Free, Stockpress Free
Self-serve, published pricingAbout $90–$600 a month ($1,000–$7,000 a year)Data Dwell, Stockpress, Dash
Mid-market, quote-onlyAbout $15,000–$35,000 a yearBrandfolder, Canto, Frontify
Enterprise, quote-onlyAbout $35,000–$75,000 a year, and $100,000+ for large deploymentsBynder, Aprimo

Quote-only figures come from procurement data and third-party reports, not vendor price lists, so treat them as ranges. Sources are listed at the end of this post.

The four DAM pricing models

The pricing model matters more than the starting price, because it decides how your bill grows. A DAM that looks cheap for five users can cost several times as much once agencies, sales and regional teams need access.

ModelYou pay forHow it scalesWho uses it
Per seatEach named user, often with storage on topCost rises with every person you add, including partnersBrandfolder, Bynder (named users plus modules)
Storage-basedThe amount of content you storeFlat as the team grows; rises as the library growsStockpress
Usage tiers with unlimited usersA plan sized by storage, downloads or portalsFlat as the team grows; you move up a tier when usage growsData Dwell, Dash
Custom quote and modulesA negotiated package, with features sold as add-onsHard to predict; each new need can mean a new moduleBynder, Canto, Frontify, Aprimo

If many people outside your core team need access, such as agencies, distributors or sales, a model with unlimited users usually costs far less over three years than a per-seat one.

DAM prices compared, vendor by vendor

Only a handful of DAM vendors publish their prices. For the rest, the best guide is procurement data on what buyers actually paid. Prices below are in US dollars, as of October 2026.

Medians for Brandfolder, Frontify, Bynder and Aprimo come from Vendr procurement data as reported by third parties; the Bynder median varies between snapshots, which is why it is shown as a range. Canto's ranges come from third-party reports, as Canto prices every package on request.

The hidden costs to budget for

The subscription is rarely the whole bill. These are the costs that most often surprise buyers in year one.

  • Implementation and professional services. For enterprise DAMs, services commonly add 15–30% of the first-year contract value. Self-serve platforms usually have no implementation fee.
  • Add-on modules. Quote-based vendors often sell approvals, brand portals, templating or AI as separate modules or higher packages, so the entry quote may not include what you need.
  • Per-seat growth. On per-seat plans, every new colleague, agency or distributor adds cost. Check the price of viewer and guest seats, not only editors.
  • Storage and download overages. Plans priced on usage charge for extra storage or downloads. Check whether going over is blocked, paused or billed automatically. See how Data Dwell handles limits.
  • Migration. Moving thousands of assets and their metadata takes time. Some vendors include it, some charge for it, and some old vendors charge to export.
  • Contract terms. Annual or multi-year contracts lower the price but lock you in. Ask about renewal increases before you sign.
  • Admin time. A complex DAM may need a dedicated administrator. That salary can cost more than the software.

A fair comparison looks at three-year total cost, including services and expected team growth, rather than the first-year subscription. Our guide to the business case for DAM shows how to build that comparison.

Is a DAM worth the price?

A DAM is worth the price when the time your team loses looking for, recreating and resending files costs more than the software. For most teams sharing content with partners, that point comes early.

A simple way to check: multiply the hours your team spends hunting for files each week by an hourly cost. For example, if 10 people each lose one hour a week at $40 an hour, that is about $19,000 a year, roughly 18 times the $1,068 list price of a Starter plan on a published-price DAM. Real results vary: PPDS, the global provider of Philips Professional Displays, saves more than two hours a week on searching, uploading and sharing files with Data Dwell (case study).

Is metadata and tagging software worth it?

Yes, once your library grows past what people can browse by folder, usually a few thousand assets. Search only works if assets are described, and AI tagging does that without hours of manual work. Check whether tagging is included in the DAM plan before buying a separate metadata tool: on many platforms it already is. Read more on why metadata is critical to DAM success.

Is brand asset management software worth it?

Yes, if outdated logos, expired campaign images or unapproved files are reaching customers. One reprinted brochure or one licence breach can cost more than a year of software. The features that pay back here are approvals and expiry dates and controlled sharing with agencies.

Is a paid media library worth it compared with a free shared drive?

Shared drives cost less per gigabyte, but they are built for storing files, not for finding and sharing approved content. A media library adds search by metadata, branded portals for partners, expiry dates and usage tracking. Teams usually switch when version mix-ups, permission requests and "where is that file?" messages start taking hours each week. See DAM vs Google Drive, DAM vs SharePoint and 5 signs you've outgrown shared folders.

When a DAM is not worth it yet

If you are a very small team with a few hundred files and nobody outside the company needs them, a shared drive is enough. A free DAM plan is a low-risk way to test whether you have outgrown it.

How to estimate what you will pay

  1. Count everyone who needs access, including agencies, distributors and sales, not only the marketing team.
  2. Measure your library: total storage today and how fast it grows each year.
  3. Estimate monthly downloads and how much you share outside the company.
  4. List your must-haves, such as approvals, expiry dates, portals, SSO or integrations, and check which plan or module includes each.
  5. Ask every vendor the same questions: Is pricing per user? What happens if we go over a limit? Is there an implementation or migration fee? How long is the contract, and what is the renewal increase? Can we export everything if we leave?

Where Data Dwell fits

Data Dwell publishes every price and has a free-forever plan with 3 users, 3 GB and 5 portals. Paid plans start at $89 a month with unlimited users, and asset lifecycle governance, AI search and portals are included rather than sold as modules. It suits marketing and commercial teams that share content with partners and want a predictable bill. For product-information management in the same system, an enterprise suite may be a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

How much does DAM software cost per month?

Published self-serve DAM plans cost about $90 to $600 a month in 2026. Quote-only platforms usually work out at $1,250 to $6,250 a month once annual contracts are divided by twelve.

Is there free DAM software?

Yes. Some DAMs, including Data Dwell and Stockpress, offer permanent free plans with limits on users or storage. Others offer only a time-limited trial.

Why don't most DAM vendors publish prices?

Enterprise vendors price each deal on users, storage and modules, and negotiate. That makes list prices hard to show, but it also makes costs harder to compare and forecast.

What is the cheapest way to get a DAM for a small team?

Start on a free plan, then move to a published plan with unlimited users so the bill does not rise as the team grows.

How much does Bynder cost?

Bynder does not publish prices. Procurement data puts the median contract at roughly $37,000 to $41,000 a year, with implementation often adding 15–30% in year one. See 9 Bynder alternatives to compare.

How much does Canto cost?

Canto does not publish prices and quotes every package. Third-party reports put entry contracts at roughly $6,000 to $15,000 a year, rising to about $50,000 for larger teams. See Data Dwell vs Canto.
