How to Turn Assets into Subassets

If a file that belongs with another asset was uploaded as a separate asset, you can attach it to that asset as a subasset. This keeps source files, alternate formats and supporting documents together with the main asset, instead of next to it in the library.

Requires permissionYou need permission to edit the assets. Don't see Make subasset? Ask your workspace admin.

Before You Start

  • A subasset lives with its main asset. It moves into the main asset's folder and no longer shows up in folder browsing or search results.
  • You can undo this later by detaching the subasset. See Detaching a Subasset.

Steps to Turn Assets into Subassets

Option 1: One asset

  1. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on the asset in grid, list or map view and select Make subasset. Or, in the asset details, choose Make Asset a Subasset.
  2. In Make asset a subasset, find the main asset. The list shows assets in the same folder, with their type, date, folder and ID. To find others, type in Search for the main asset by name.
  3. Select the main asset and click Attach.

Option 2: Several assets at once

  1. Select the assets using their checkboxes.
  2. Click Make subassets.
  3. Find and select the main asset, then click Attach. All selected assets become subassets of it.

Detaching a Subasset

  1. Open the main asset and go to its Subassets tab.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on the subasset and select Detach.

The subasset becomes a main asset again, in the folder of its former main asset, and shows up in browsing and search.

Tips

  • Use the ID in the list to tell apart assets with the same name.
  • To add new files as subassets straight away, upload them to the main asset instead. See How to Upload Subassets.
